Key dimensions and considerations to remember when you're hanging a picture frame in your house

01-Feb-2024
When hanging picture frames above furniture or on a wall at home, there are a few key dimensions and considerations to keep in mind:

1. Height from the floor: The center of the picture should be at eye level, which is typically 57 to 60 inches from the floor according to many art galleries and museums. This rule might vary if your wall does not have furniture under it.

2. Above Furniture: If the picture is going above a piece of furniture, a good rule of thumb is to hang it 6-8 inches above the furniture. This can be adjusted based on the height of the furniture and the size of the artwork. But keep in mind that the artwork should visually connect to the furniture below it, not float high above it.

3. Scale with Furniture: The artwork or group of artworks should be about two-thirds the width of the furniture piece. For example, if you're hanging a picture above a 60-inch wide sofa, aim for artwork that's about 40 inches wide.

4. Wall Space: If you're creating a gallery wall or hanging multiple pictures, leave 2-3 inches between each frame for optimal visual clarity.

5. Balancing: Balance larger pictures with other large items or groupings of smaller items, and smaller pictures with other small items. This helps keep the room visually balanced.

6. Lighting: Ensure there is enough lighting on the picture. You might consider adding picture lights if necessary.

These are general guidelines and may not apply to every situation. Use your judgment and what looks best to your eye in your specific space
