Perodua Alza Tops MPV Sales in Malaysia, Xpander Overtakes Veloz.

10-Oct-2024

Based on JPJ data from January to August 2024, the Perodua Alza is the clear leader in Malaysia’s B-segment MPV market, with 28,967 units sold. This puts it well ahead of its non-national rivals, such as the Mitsubishi Xpander (5,902 units) and the Toyota Veloz (4,433 units).

The second-generation Alza, launched in July 2022, introduced a new platform called the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA), replacing the older model. It features a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and D-CVT gearbox, with prices ranging from RM62,500 to RM75,500, making it Malaysia’s most affordable MPV.

Three months after the Alza launch, the Toyota Veloz was introduced as a more premium option. Also based on the DNGA platform, the Veloz is built at Perodua’s plant and comes with a RM20k higher price tag than the top-spec Alza AV. For the extra cost, it offers features such as a different front design, standard LED daytime running lights (DRLs), 17-inch wheels, higher ground clearance, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, and a steering wheel that adjusts for both reach and tilt.

The JPJ data only goes up to August, and since the updated Mitsubishi Xpander was launched last month, the sales numbers mentioned are for the original model. The Xpander first launched in 2020 at a price of RM92,000 and has seen several price increases over time. It has been Malaysia's best-selling non-national MPV, with around 10,000 units sold each year.

The Xpander is still locally assembled in Pekan, Pahang and continues to use the same 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine pair with a four-speed automatic transmission. The facelifted model is now available in two versions: a base model for RM99,980 and a Plus model for RM109,980. The new version features updated front and rear designs, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, a new dashboard layout, a redesigned steering wheel, digital air conditioning, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, and a center armrest that includes USB-C and USB-A charging ports for devices.
