Cause of Flickering Light Bulbs

25-Jul-2022

When a lamp is flickering, it can be annoying for several reasons. From the fact that this disturbance can make visibility harder to the annoyance of just not knowing why it is happening, it can be a pain. Let's take a look at the top four common causes of flickering light bulbs.

𝗟𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗯𝘀
One of the most common and easiest to fix causes of flickering light bulbs is that the bulb is simply loose. This is a quick fix and should be one of the first things to attempt to remedy the problem. Simply turn off the fixture and allow the bulb to cool and then try tightening the bulb to make sure it is tight enough in the socket.

If the bulb isn't loose, another one of the common causes of flickering light bulbs is a loose connection. The connection can be the wiring in the fixture to the ceiling as well as loose receptacles, loose connections in the terminals, or loose connections in the circuit breaker. If you are inexperienced with the wiring of lighting solutions, it is safer to call in a professional for these matters. If you are experienced with electrical components, these can be rather easy fixes. Keep in mind that loose connections can be potentially dangerous and lead to fires, so this is not something you want to put off or ignore.

A voltage change can affect the lights in a home because the appliances may be temporarily pulling higher voltages when turned on which can make lights flicker as a result. You can test this theory by turning on a large appliance in the room where the flickering occurs and see if the two are related. If the lights flicker when you turn on the large appliances, you should call an electrician to remedy the wiring and voltage issues.

Another reason lights may be flickering is simply that they are fluorescent and nearing the end of their lifespan. Fluorescent is known to flicker when they reach 75% of its expected lifespan. If the lamps are fluorescent, this may be the problem which is a simple lamp change, however, if the lamps are not fluorescent then the problem is most likely one of the above-mentioned reasons.
